Understanding Photoshop Layer Panel Features

Although Photoshop enables images to be edited through layers, it doesn't operate in a layer-by-layer fashion. Instead, an image is constructed by placing an image or selection of an image onto a transparent canvas.

When you edit a layer, Photoshop immediately displays a preview of how the layer will look in the image as you work, allowing you to readily see what your changes will do to the image.

This preview appears within the Layer and Adjustments panels, as shown in Figure 1-2 and Figure 1-3, respectively.

FIGURE 1-2: The Layer panel's Layers panel displays the layers of the image that you can edit.

FIGURE 1-3: The Adjustments panel features a preview of how your image will look after editing.

When you're working on an image, you can see only a small portion of the image at a time — usually only a thumbnail version of the image. For full-page images, you may have to increase the workspace for the entire image.

If you're editing an image in a folder, the entire folder contents show up as thumbnails in the workspace area. You can zoom in and out of the workspace as needed. When you use the shortcut Ctrl+1 to access the workspace, you can work on an image of any size.

The rectangle on the left side of the canvas is your editable work area. This region represents the area within your entire canvas that you can draw on. The bottom section of the canvas is not an editable area, but it shows a preview of the area above it.

The entire canvas, including the preview area and the work area, may be customized by choosing View⇒Show/Hide Workspace to display or hide the canvas. You can also drag the corners of the canvas and resize it as needed.

If you want to work on an image that's not open in Photoshop, you can open it and then open the appropriate workspace, or you can use the Open As command. You can also use the Save As command to save your work to another file.

To help you maintain your layers, the Swatches panel features a large palette of standard color swatches. You can use the color-matching feature to quickly change colors that you see in your image. The Channels panel enables you to add or remove the color channels (

Photoshop Elements 2018 should look something like this

Photoshop Elements 2018 is currently in an early beta phase so it isn't compatible with all of the features of the professional edition of Photoshop. The free edition of Photoshop Elements is limited in what it can do. Most people aren't likely to use it as a professional tool.

However, you can still use the basics of Photoshop Elements to create custom memes and design graphics for your images.

Below, we'll teach you how to edit images in Elements.

Steps to Editing Images

There are a few steps to editing images in Elements:

Setting the Background Color: In the Choose Viewer Color dialog, choose a new color for the background of your photos. This color will be used as the background color for your layers. You can use any color you want.

Choose Viewer Color

When the color dialog opens, click on the Create New Viewer Color button.

Create New Viewer Color

The Create New Viewer Color dialog will open.

Choose Viewer Color

Pick the color you want for your new image background.

Steps to Editing Images

Step 1: Cropping the Image

The first step to editing is to crop the image. This means that you'll need to select and cut out unnecessary areas of an image. Elements will make it easier to crop your images. You may use any image editing program, like Photoshop, to crop your image.

At the bottom of the editing window, you'll see the Crop tool.

The Crop tool will be available in the toolbox. The cropping tool has four properties:

Zoom: This property lets you zoom in and out, pan and scroll around the image. Zoom In: To zoom in, click on the zoom icon. Zoom Out: To zoom out, click on the zoom icon. Right-Click: Click the right-click icon to crop the image. Pan: Click and hold on the image to move it.

You can zoom in and out by clicking on the zoom icon. You can move the image around by clicking and dragging. If you click on the right-click icon, a menu will open.

Crop Tool Properties

The Crop tool will open the Crop toolbox. In the toolbox, you'll see the Zoom In, Zoom Out, Right-Click, and Pan features.

A question frequently asked about Digital Painting is, "What's the difference between digital painting and computer art?" There is no single "best" answer to this question. Different artists view this as a matter of preference. Computer artists believe that digital painting is not art, and traditional artists believe that computer art is not painting.
While some artists might argue that digital painting is not art, there are many who find the process of painting on a computer both enjoyable and satisfying. It's a great way to explore techniques you might not otherwise attempt.
There are many more resources available for practicing digital painting, from "digital art" magazines to schools, associations, and online art schools and tutorials.
Whatever you call it, digital painting is an artistic process. You can view it as either traditional or digital, or somewhere in between. But it's your personal choice to define and interpret the distinction.

The Puppet Warp tool is useful for bringing shapes in an image into alignment. This is ideal for correcting images of children or pets that may be uncooperative. The Airbrush tool is similar to a brush, but with a difference in control: you can paint any color or shade of any color and specify the opacity of the paint.

A Pen tool is similar to a pencil in that you can draw lines and shapes with the cursor. A Pen tool is a little different because you can also change the width and shape of a line with the Pen pressure controls.
